PERSONALITY,
[style=padding: 20px;]when people first meet howell, many people quite correctly assume he was a former ravenclaw. he's learned, he's very articulate, and his wit gives him just the right about of humour to still be taken seriously. he has a certain air of self-assuredness and easy confidence that tends to rub off on those around him. however, he himself often doesn't realise how assertive he can be. he's a bit self-effacing in that way, for although he's often quite charismatic without realising it, he becomes flustered once conscious of his bold behaviour. he's quite in denial that he has any of the courage or presence of a leader, but the fact of the matter is that howell is often well-respected and the strength and clarity of his convictions make people willingly listen when he decides to voice them. he doesn't ever feel to prove himself to anyone; he believes his words and actions speak for themselves. although he doesn't feel comfortable with leadership roles, he has the ability to step up and get the job done if need be. he doesn't think of himself as a particularly "good person" or "hard worker", but he believes in treating others with respect and in keeping one's word.
that's often one of the main problems of howell - he can, at times, be incredibly self-unaware. he misjudges his own personality and often doesn't correctly gauge his own strengths and weaknesses. he becomes very absorbed in what he does and blames himself when he ends up leaving something else ignored. he's adventurous and passionate and will devote all his energy to what he choses to work on. when caught up in a task, he focuses on it and tunes everything else out, which can cause him to become irritated when faced with distractions. if he's got his concentration focused on something, you'd best leave him be. at these times he can be demanding, impatient, and sarcastic. even when in a mood, however, he's not an extremely quick-tempered person and he usually becomes silent when angry rather than yelling or arguing. the most common times he'll snap at someone is if he's interrupted from the task at hand. afterwards, howell usually feels sorry for not paying attention to someone or their feelings and tries to make it up to them, even if the offence was small - in a case like this, it's rather easy to take advantage of him due to his willingness to be forgiven.
that hyper-focused mind, however, is one of the reasons howell is so good at what he does. if you assign him a task, you know it'll get done. he's efficient, punctual, and resourceful, and his attention to detail has helped him perfect his skills as an auror over the years. he is, however, rather disorganised. he hoards books and probably has at least eight unwashed tea mugs laying around his flat. and even if he is able to make split-second decisions on the job, simple choices give him pause. don't ever ask him whether he wants italian or chinese food for dinner, because by the time he finally has an answer, it'll be time to sleep. most people assume he's always orderly, decisive, and lives life with a solemn sense of responsibility. it's really not the case. in fact, those first meeting him and taking in his intelligent, professional demeanour would never guess that he's actually quite dorky. for all his social propriety and slightly highbrow manner - both inherited from his pureblood background - howell can be a bit silly. having been a bookworm and a bit of an oddball in his childhood, he's carried on his geeky sense of humour and playful, partially self-conscious behaviour on into his adulthood.
howell's ability to know when to be serious and when to goof off has helped him with his career, but also with his friendships. he's not the most social guy, surprisingly. he doesn't have a huge interest in meeting new people or having a large group of acquaintances, and would much prefer to stay in for a quiet evening with a good book and a cup of tea than go out to a big party. he prefers to have a few close friends. large crowds make him feel awkward, but put him in a room with the people he knows best and he'll relax and have fun. he stops being so tense and lets himself become more laid-back, and his ability to not take himself so seriously and poke fun at himself is what makes him easy to be around. he's quite amiable and is warm and open when being introduced to someone new, but in all honesty, he's fine with the friends he already has, and he's kept them for years. howell's a bit esoteric in the sense that only a few know the true dynamics of his personality and are privy to what he's really thinking. he doesn't open up to just anyone.

HISTORY,
howell was born on the outskirts of cardiff, wales to gareth and rhosyn llewellyn. his father belonged to one of the more prominent welsh pureblood families, which included wizards such as "dangerous" dai llewellyn, a famous quidditch player for the caerphilly catapults, the team that howell goes for. his mother was from a lesser pureblood family - and possibly one with a few muggle-borns married into the family tree along the line. she, along with howell's father, encouraged him to take pride in his wizarding heritage. however, he was taught from a young age that he should respect those with different blood or of other races as well. he had a privileged and educated childhood, but his parents did not allow him to grow up believing he could abuse such advantages.
when howell was born, it became quite clear that he wasn't a normal child, even for a wizard. within a few hours he'd gone from having peach fuzz on the top of his head had turned into a dark wisp of hair, and his blue eyes had changed to brown. it quickly became clear that he was, in fact, a metamorphagus. in the early years of his life, howell had little control over his shifting, but by the time he was three he had "settled" in the form which he had genetically inherited from his parents. his appearance no longer changed with such volatility, though it still did under strong emotions. by the time he was seven he had better control of changing as he pleased, and he went through a series of different personas for his own amusement. it could perhaps be said that during this stage in his life, howell was already learning some of the skills of acting and disguise that could prove very valuable in an auror's career. at the time, however, his childlike mind prompted him to play out the roles of pirates, princes, or daring adventurers.
by the time he was old enough to be sent to hogwarts, howell had assumed more responsibility with his ability, and hardly changed relative to his younger years. in fact, many students were unaware of the fact that he was a metamorphagus. he was a bit withdrawn and preferred studying in the library or reading by the lake, sometimes exploring the castle or its grounds on his own. since he had been such an inquisitive and eager-to-learn child, being placed in ravenclaw was no surprise. although he kept to himself his first couple years, his easygoing and affable demeanour earned him a close circle of friends in his latter teenage years. he and a few other boys formed a group they dubbed "the diogenes club", where they talked about classic muggle and wizarding literature; philosophies of magic, science, and politics; and current events. a lot of the time, however, was devoted to reading or studying quietly or meeting up to go mess around by drinking wine and reading poetry - sometimes improvising with their own verses. their official meetings were once a month in the room of requirements, but he and his friends often did things together other than the club, as the gatherings were only really a forum to discuss things in a less casual setting.
when howell graduated, he returned to cardiff in hopes of starting some sort of writing career. he got a post at as a journalist for the local wizarding newspaper there, but he found that creative writing intersected him much more and that the job wasn't his cup of tea. because his father had money, howell didn't worry much about looking for work, and so quit his post to focus on writing a novel. however, he lost inspiration and found himself in a rut, the days feeling uneventful and unbearably monotonous.
when he was twenty-one he decided to get a flat in london and work for the ministry as an auror. he'd wanted to be one in his younger school years, and though he'd put the thought aside as he had veered towards more intellectual pursuits, he had still done all the requirements for the job. he found the work to be difficult, but just the right kind of interesting and exciting that made him determined to succeed. his career as an auror became his main focus, and he enjoyed the work immensely. a side effect was that it boosted his muse and broadened his imagination, which helped tremendously with his writing. howell also found himself using is metamorphagus abilities much more extensively. he'd opt for his casual, natural ginger hair when at home and tried to make it look more formal when in the office, and when he was out on a mission and not using a particular disguise, he preferred to use dark hair. it may be that it was just a touch of the dramatist in him, but it pleased him.
when astor delacroix was appointed as minister of magic, howell found himself questioning whether or not he wanted to continue working as an auror. although he loved his job, he disagreed with delacroix's policies regarding non-human creatures. he considered resigning in favour of becoming more serious about his writing career. he was reluctant to give up his post, however, until he got word that delacroix was making plans to persecute against metamorphagi. knowing that the ministry members were aware of his abilities, he quickly resigned and made plans to go into hiding. before he could leave london, howell was approached by the second order of the phoenix, who were willing to help him pass under the ministry's radar whilst using his metamorphagus abilities to help them. he willingly agreed, not only because of the security such a membership promised, but also because he agreed with what they were doing. he believes firmly in the equal rights of non-human creatures - not just metamorphagi like himself - and hopes he can make some form of change. still, part of him is also guiltily thrilled by the allure of some sense of adventure usually only found in his books. nevertheless, the main reason for joining the order was based on his principles, and howell is determined to stand by them.
