the sound of rustling papers, pages of old, worn out books being flipped, and hushed whispers echoed throughout the library always sent a nice feeling of peace through ruby. it seemed to be one of the only places which had a strict rule about no loud noises. while ruby could probably pass as a poster child for all things loud, even she needed a break from a lot of noise every so often. but today was different, today it was almost completely silent and it seemed ruby was one of the few in the library. this was all thanks to break. she'd stayed here, for once. mostly because she was tired of her own home and admittedly, tired of her parents. if she went home she'd be bossed around by her father or would be told to do chores by her mother.
while she still didn't have many freedoms here at hogwarts, since of course a school always has restrictions, it somehow made her feel more at ease. plus, she'd never been big on celebrating the christmas holidays, especially since she wasn't one to waste money on anyone unless anyone meant herself. one of the not so great traits she inherited from her father. she could always try and make stuff herself to give as presents but that wasn't generally something she enjoyed, mostly due to the fact that she always ended up yelling curse words at the present and eventually throwing it against the wall several times out of frustration. even still, to be nice, she remembered to send out cards to her parents filled with fluffy love and thanking them several times for being such wonderful parents. the only part she did enjoy about the christmas season would always be the snow. she loved playing in the snow - building snow men, having snow ball fights, making snow angels, etc. and in fact she'd already wasted copious amounts of energy outside and it wasn't even two in the afternoon yet.
pulling out a random book and sitting down in front of the stacks on the floor, ruby began to aimlessly flip through the book's pages, not really reading - just looking at the illustrations. she loved reading of course, but usually by reading she meant reading novels ... books with plots, that sort of thing. not biographies or reference books. the library probably had some of those sorts in the stacks somewhere, but ruby just wasn't in that somewhere area so apparently she was stuck reading something about the history of trolls. so, so incredibly boring. sighing, ruby picked herself up from the ground, gave up on the book, and slammed it shut. the noise echoed throughout the quiet library and she cringed as the librarian swiftly came over to scold her about the noise. carefully, ruby placed the book back where she'd found it and looked around for a different, hopefully more interesting book.
something small moved in the corner of ruby's eye and she turned around quickly to see what it was. but, there was nothing there. she shook her head at herself and sighed as she moved her hand along the edges of the books before stopping at one really old one and taking it out slowly. she carefully dusted the book off and opened to the front, no title. so, she opened it to the middle, something about magical creatures. pondering for a few moments, she decided to give it a try and started to walk away, but before she could something moved in the corner of her eye once again, and looking over this time she was face to face with a big black spider. on an impulse ruby screamed and dropped the book she was holding. starting to look closer though, she realized it wasn't actually big, and it wasn't even that scary. she'd only just picked up the book before the librarian came rushing over and scolded her several times until finally asking ruby to leave the library. apologizing profusely, she was ushered out quickly, a million apologies still streaming off of her tongue.
ruby was already well down one of the corridors away from the library when she realized she still had the book. stopping and holding it in front of her as though it was some sort of a weapon she'd just committed murder with, she debated whether or not it was worth it to go back and return it like a good student, or keep it for a while and not tell a soul. ruby wasn't generally a 'good' student anyway, so it probably wouldn't matter. and her reputation with the librarian was currently not so great, she could always return the book at the end of the year and hope she'd be able to think of some other excuse... or just not return it at all. she tucked the book safely in her arms, hoping no one had actually noticed this entire ordeal from the not so scary spider, to the screaming to the stolen book, and went on her way acting as though nothing had actually happened.
